Environmental Initiatives:
Camphill Village Copake is home to around 240 people including 105 adults with special needs. The village is located on Camphill Road, in the town of Copake, New York and was started in 1961 as part of the international Camphill movement.
There are some twenty homes, a biodynamic farm, vegetable, seed and herb gardens and a number of workshops on the 600-acre parcel. The homes are somewhat clustered on about 50 acres of the site. In the community houses, both large and small, those with special needs share the home life with those who support and work with them.
Camphill Village is a working village with everyone using their abilities for the benefit of the community. The farmer uses organic and biodynamic methods in rearing livestock, producing milk and growing crops. We also grow and process biodynamic vegetables and seeds and have a herb workshop. There is an active forestry and estate department with a valuable timber and maple syrup production. Our bakery produces organic bread and biscuits. Other workshops are co-op, café, weavery, stained glass workshop and woodworkshop.
The Estate workshop takes care of all aspects of landscaping such as snow-plowing in winter and lawn care in the summer months.
The Maintenance department takes care of all other maintenance issues ranging from computer systems with a village wide internet system to the sewage treatment plant. There are 5 trades persons employed in the maintenance department with one co-worker who acts as facilities manager and project manager on the contracted-out new build and renovation projects.
There is an active Building & Maintenance group that consists of 7 co-workers who meet two-weekly to discuss and decide on all practical and policy issues of construction and maintenance.
The Building & Maintenance budget is around $110,000 (excluding wages) for day-to-day maintenance work and around $250,000 for small projects. There is a separate budget for the larger new build and renovation projects.
