Miscellaneous Environmental Improvements:

Facts
There are many ways to improve energy efficiency and waste on a small scale and through increased awareness. The Camphill Village Community has, with help from its maintenance department and estate workshop, implemented several environmental improvements:

Implementation

  • Recycling of paper & cardboard, wood, metal, bottles and tins, pig-food and compost. Each house and workshop separates its waste which is collected by the farmers and estate crew on a weekly basis.
  • Use of Low-Energy light bulbs in outside lights, corridors, utility spaces and workshops.
  • Installation of programmable digital thermostats in houses and workshops.
  • Installation of high efficiency IR-halogen light bulbs in the Fountain Hall auditorium. This improved light levels and light quality with an electricity saving of 25%.
  • Renovation of the hotwater solar panels of the care-houses.
This solar hotwater system had been turned off for the last 8 years or so due to lack of expertise and contractor knowledge to carry out repair work. A new local solar company was recently involved in the repair of these panels and the maintenance department completed the further integration into the hotwater system with the result that 60% of the solar panels are back into operation. One panel is broken beyond repair.
